Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful & cleanest lakes you could possibly imagine. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains where ski resorts are abundant. Many people think that skiing is what it is all about, but the fishing, swimming and all the summer sports are just as wonderful. There is something for every lifestyle. Many resorts are available for your vacation enjoyment, and camping is also available. Restaurants from the small family type to the great steakhouses & every kind of food you can think of can be found. Day time can find you laying on the beach or skiing when the snow (and there is a lot) is calling you. Then at night, there are many casino’s from small to the luxury ones and again restaurants of every kind and great shows to go along with them. Many people visit and many live in the area. Some of the most beautiful homes you can imagine are available for those that want to make the move to the High Sierra’s. Cedar Ridge

Cedar Ridge is located just at the edge of Grass Valley on scenic Highway 174. Cedar Ridge is what my dad used to call, “a wide spot in the road”. Don’t blink as you pass by or you will miss it. The elevation there is just up a little higher than downtown Grass Valley so when it snows, you will find more there to build a snow man. Cedar Ridge is a beautiful area with many tall pines and cedars gracing its varied terrain.

Cedar Ridge has it’s own post office, a neighborhood store, video store and other small businesses. It is host to the gated community of the “Cedars” where homes range in the upper $400,000 or higher.

The area from Cedar Ridge to Chicago Park is well known for its produce. Many of the growers who bring their produce to the Saturday Growers Market at the Fair Grounds live and grow their crops in this sun belt area.

Lake Wildwood

Lake Wildwood is a picturesque gated community located 10 miles west of Grass Valley, just off Hwy 20, near Penn Valley. Penn Valley

Penn Valley is a quiet community just to the west of Grass Valley, down Hwy 20. Penn Valley was known in its early days as the “Pantry of the Northern Mines.” It is a rich agricultural area dotted with farms and cattle ranches. It is just above the fog, and below the snow. A perfect location.

Penn Valley features Englebright Lake, which has water accessible camp sites, swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking. They also offer party boats and house boats through Skipper’s Cove Marina.

Penn Valley also offers the beautiful South Yuba River with its hiking trails and scenic swim areas.

Lake of the Pines

This wonderful gated community twelve miles south of Grass Valley surrounds a picturesque man made lake of approximately 230 acres, perfect for water skiing, boating and fishing. This is truly a “Vacation where you live” subdivision, with 18 hole golf course, clubhouse, tennis courts, swimming pool, marina, boat launch, and several lakeside parks with sandy beaches, playgrounds and picnic tables. Retirees & families with children all enjoy the amenities found here. Prices and styles of homes vary in size & location. There are three shopping centers within
1/2 mile of Lake of the Pines, which provide basic needs. Then add the huge shopping center known as the Galleria within 45 minutes & any store you could imagine is there. Whether you are looking for gifts, clothing, appliances, furniture, electronics & so much more it is there and Costco and Sam’s are right there close. There are two hospitals within 1/2 hour & many doctors from family to specialist. It is approximately 1,500 foot with many sunny winter days & blue skies. Summers are warm and enjoyable-above the valley fog.

Bridgeport Covered Bridge

Pioneers and gold-seekers were dependent on river crossings for the transportation of supplies, livestock, and people between the cities and gold camps.
The Bridgeport Covered Bridge was built in 1862 as a toll bridge. It was built of Douglas fir timbers and Sugar Pine shakes. Bridges were covered to protect the wood. At 229 feet, it is the world’s longest single span truss/arch covered bridge.

You can still walk across this wonderful piece of Gold Country history and stop at the visitor center to learn more about the great gold mining days. During the summer they show you how to pan for gold and the shop is filled with gifts as well as the history of the bridge and the Yuba River. For swimming, fishing and naturally gold panning there are many parks and great spots to take your picnic lunch & just enjoy the area. This is not far from Lake Wildwood.

Alta Sierra

Alta Sierra is a wonderful rambling residential community where the homes have natural as well as landscaped yards. Whatever your style, you will find it here. Situated at approximately 2,000 to 2,200 foot elevation, it is said to be above the valley fog and heat, but below the normal snow line.

Nevada City

Rough & Ready

“A little bitty place, with lots of charm and friendly people” is how Rough & Rough is described. It was founded by miners who served under “Old Rough & Ready” Zachary Taylor. When a Mining Tax was imposed by the government the town seceded from the Union in April of 1850. They rejoined three months later at the Fourth of July celebration when Old Glory went up.
Rough & Ready is located in Nevada County, a short drive west of Grass Valley. Rough & Ready provides ideal country living with reasonable commuting times to metropolitan areas. It’s proximity & self employed professionals who along with conventional working and retired families now enjoy living in Rough & Ready.
The average summer temperature is in the 80’s, with winter average in the 40’s. The approximate altitude of 1885 feet above sea level, with an average rainfall of slightly over 52 inches gives Rough & Ready a natural setting of usually above the fog and below the winter snow level.
Rough & Ready has original historical buildings buildings dating from the 1850’s which include a grange hall, schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, wedding chapel & historical cemetery.
Secession day’s celebration is held on the last Sunday in June. It is a family style event that begins with a pancake breakfast, music, games, crafts fair, more food and entertainment. A special feature is the Saga of Rough & Ready presented by local Thespians.
The Chili Cook-off is a yearly Rough & Ready event in October and is sanctioned by the International Chili Society. Contestant chili cooker compete for cash prizes and for ranking that qualifies them to compete for the $25,000 prize in the annual grand ICS Chili Cook-off.
